Lynn Casey

Charlie Marten Memorial Award

After working in the hospitality industry for over 26 years Lynn and her husband retired to Delaware. They live in the Peninsula community and enjoy playing both golf and Pickleball. Lynn has never been one to sit still. She played both field hockey and tennis in high school and tennis in college. She started playing Pickleball in 2013, first in her new community and then with the First State Pickleball Club in Dagsboro. She immediately became hooked with the game. She feels that Pickleball is like no other sport. It is social, challenging and fun. Then one morning on November 28th, 2014 she felt a lump in her breast which started her on a journey which included a mastectomy, chemotherapy, radiation and breast reconstruction. In a split second her life changed. She does not take life for granted anymore. After Thanksgiving in 2015, Lynn reached her goal by returning to the Pickleball court and started getting her game back together slowly but with purpose. She played her first tournament at the Ocean City Open in May of 2016 and took third place in 50+ mixed doubles with her partner. In June at the Beach Blast she and her partners took 3rd place in women’s doubles and second place in mixed doubles after a hard fought match for the gold. After a turned ankle slowed her down a bit at the beginning of July, she competed in the Delaware Senior Olympics tournament in September and won a silver medal in mixed doubles. In August she and her partner placed second low net in the member golf tournament at Peninsula. For her inspirational return to successful competition in Delaware Senior Olympics and elsewhere after a courageous battle against breast cancer DSO honors Lynn Casey with its Charlie Martin Memorial Award.
