Charlie Marten Memorial Award 2018

Pearl Morris

Charlie Marten Memorial Award

Pearl discovered the game of pickleball in fall of 2012, after retiring in September and moving from Maryland to Delaware.  She immediately got hooked.  She started to compete in 2013 at the Beach Blast Tournament in Dagsboro.  On October 31st of 2017 she had both knees replaced.  After surgery she had complications consisting of blood clots in both legs and anemia which slowed her recovery.  In spite of these complications she was back on the court competing less than 5 months later on March 10th 2018 in Dover and she and her partner won  silver in women’s doubles.  Interestingly Diane Milam, Pearl’s pickleball’s partner, played an important role in Pearl’s recovery.  Having experienced the same surgery she provided support during her hospital stay, visited her during in-patient rehab, and attended some of her physical therapy sessions during out-patient care.  This helped Pearl return to the court stronger than she was before.

Pearl has competed in a variety of competitions including; Pittsburgh Gamma Games, Connecticut Senior Games, the Utah Fall Brawl, Maine Regionals, Virginia Senior Games, Maryland Senior Games, Ohio Senior Games, Pocomoke, MD tournaments, Pennsylvania tournaments, the Huntsman World Games in Utah and the National Senior Olympics in Minnesota, Alabama and Cleveland.

She has earned the following medals in her competitions: in 2015 at the National Senior Games in Minnesota a bronze in singles pickleball, in 2016 DSO competitions she earned a gold in women’s doubles and women’s singles and silver in mixed doubles pickleball and at the Huntsman Games a Gold in Women’s softball.  In 2017 in the Maryland Senior Games she won gold medals in women’s doubles and mixed doubles pickleball, at the Virginia Mid Atlantic Regional a gold in women’s doubles in pickleball and at the Huntsman Games a bronze in women’s singles pickleball.  At the National Senior Games in Alabama she was 6th in women’s doubles and 8th in women’s singles in pickleball and won a gold in women’s softball.  In 2018 DSO she won gold in mixed and women’s doubles in pickleball and silver in women’s softball.  In the Maryland Senior Games she won a gold in women’s doubles in pickleball and a bronze in mixed doubles.  At the Virginia Senior Games she won a bronze in mixed doubles and in the Ohio Senior Games she won a bronze in women’s doubles.

For her hard, dedicated work in recovering from double knee replacement surgery and her successful return to competition on the State, Regional and National level, DSO honors Pearl Morris with its 2018 Charlie Marten Award.
