Jim Dorsey
CHARLIE MARTEN MEMORIAL AWARD
Jim has been successfully competing in DSO events since 2003 in both basketball and softball at the state level. In 2005 his basketball team won the gold medal at the National Senior Games Pittsburgh. In 2007 he competed in softball in Louisville, Kentucky. In 2009 his basketball team finished in the top eight in the Senior Games in Palo Alto. In 2011 his softball team won a silver medal in Houston. He also won a gold medal at the Delaware Games in basketball shooting.
In July of 2013 his participation was put on hold when he was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. Because of his healthy lifestyle, positive attitude and all the help he received from family and friends he made a miraculous recovery and by December and early January he was back on the softball field playing in a league in Boca Raton, Florida. Slowly his hitting got back on track but teammates still ran the bases for him. As the league continued his hitting improved until he had the “game of his life” going eight for eight including two home runs and leading his team to the championship. In 2014 his team won the New Castle County Championship and he was well enough to begin running for teammates who had helped by running for him.
For his inspirational return to successful competition in Senior Olympics after overcoming serious health issues DSO honors Jim Dorsey with its Charlie Marten Memorial Award.
