DSO 2015 Ray Wrede Lifetime Achievement Award
Al was elected president of DSO in 1995 at a critical time in the growth and development of the organization. During the next ten years under his leadership DSO experienced dramatic growth in all areas. Several regional boards were consolidated into one state board. The main office of the organization moved from the Blue Hen Mall to its current location at the Modern Maturity Center. He recruited exceptional people to serve as board members. A strong sports coordinator system was developed. He represented Delaware on the National NSGA Board for six years. Most importantly he established excellent relations with Delaware State Government which helped with the funding process.
Al also led the expansion of the mission of DSO from games only to overall healthy living through programs like Walk Delaware, the Senior Group Challenge and other activities.
During his presidency DSO Annual Games experienced a growth in participation from around 300 to over 900. The number of sports included in the Annual Games schedule was increased by 10 and our tournaments were expanded to welcome out-of-state teams.
Al also led the organization out of debt to one with balanced budgets and a small reserve fund.
Several special events were added to the DSO agenda, under his leadership, including a torch run, a 10th Anniversary Celebration, the DSO Annual Dinner and Picnic and send offs for those athletes who qualified for participation in the National Games.
Al also was an active participant in the games each year, competing in volleyball, bowling and golf earning many state medals.
For his leadership in helping DSO develop into one of the best NSGA State Organizations, DSO honors Al Marshall with its Ray Wrede Lifetime Achievement Award.
