DSO 2016 Outstanding Athlete


Dr. Bonnie L. Strang

After a highly successful career as a music educator and Band Director, Bonnie began her participation in Delaware Senior Olympics in 2007.  It didn’t take her long to establish a successful record and become an athlete extraordinaire.  She participates in three sports, badminton, pickleball and softball and has been successful in each one of them.  She has won a total of 158 medals in Delaware Senior Olympics ninety eight of which were gold.  She has won 30 medals in badminton playing singles, doubles and mixed doubles.  She has won 6 Gold medals at the Eastern Shore Games and two bronze medals in women’s doubles at the Huntsman World Games in St. George, Utah.  She has competed in many tournaments in the tri state area of Pennsylvania, Maryland and Delaware in pickleball in singles, doubles and mixed doubles competitions winning 48 medals, 22 of which were gold.   Her most successful sport, however, has been softball where she has won 72 medals of which 48 were gold.  In the first tournament in which she ever participated in Glen Bernie she was awarded  the MVP Bat.  She has been recognized as  All American three times, All World four times and All Tournament several times.  .  Bonnie has competed with four different teams representing four different states Florida, Kentucky, Virginia and Delaware.  Between 2011 and 2013 she won three gold medals with the Florida Golden Gals at the National Senior Games.  In 2015 she won a bronze with the Kentucky Thoroughbreds.  In 2007 her Delaware Blue Chicks team won fourth at the National Senior games.    In 2009 her Golden Girls team out of Virginia placed fourth.

Bonnie has also participated in two Philadelphia Phillies Phantasy Camps where she was awarded a Game ball.

When not competing Bonnie serves on the Delaware Senior Olympics Board of Directors and is the Sport’s Coordinator for Women’s Softball.  As softball coordinator she has reached out to teams from other states and has built up the DSO tournament to one involving six states in 2016.

For her outstanding success as a three sport athlete at the State, Regional and National levels Delaware Senior Olympics recognizes Dr. Bonnie Strang with its 2016 Outstanding Athlete Award.
