History

Delaware Senior Olympics: A Legacy of Senior Fitness and Sportsmanship

Founded in 1991 and operating as a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization, the Delaware Senior Olympics (DSO) was established under the sponsorship of Sussex County Senior Services, with the inaugural games held in May 1992.

A Journey of Growth and Achievement

From modest beginnings with 160 athletes competing in 11 sports in 1993, DSO has experienced remarkable growth. Our most recent qualifying year witnessed 1,100 athletes in 29 sports, reflecting a vibrant community of over 1,200 members.

National Representation and Laurels

DSO athletes have consistently showcased their prowess in the biannual National Senior Games, with participation dating back to June 1993. Notably, our athletes have earned numerous medals, including golds, in competitions across the nation, demonstrating exceptional skill and spirit.

Winter Games and Special Achievements

In addition to summer events, DSO athletes have triumphed in Winter Senior Games, starting with a memorable debut in Lake Placid, New York, in February 2000. Our representation in various sports, including ice hockey, has added to our rich legacy.

Beyond Competition: Promoting Fitness and Wellness

DSO has evolved to offer year-round fitness programs, including the popular “Walk Delaware” initiative. This program reflects our commitment to promoting wellness and active lifestyles among Delaware’s seniors, with thousands participating in walking the length and breadth of Delaware.

Strengths and Future Vision

The success of DSO is underpinned by the enthusiasm of our participants and volunteers, a robust Board of Directors and Office Staff, and the integration of athletic skills with fitness programs. As we continue to grow, our focus remains on empowering seniors through sports and physical activity, contributing to a vibrant, healthy community for the 50+ population.
